In classical interiors, mirrors were framed not for display, but for containment — enclosed within carved structure that balanced reflection with craft.

This mirror frame follows that architectural approach. The circular aperture is bordered by layered carving, crowned with sculpted motifs that rise gently above the frame. Scroll forms and curved elements anchor the lower portion, creating vertical rhythm.

The carving begins with circular alignment. Proportion is established first. Relief work follows in stages — background reduction, form shaping, and refinement. Feathered contours, ornamental curves, and surface textures are shaped through deliberate chisel passes.

The structure holds visual weight without excess. The design is neither flat nor exaggerated. It carries depth through controlled relief rather than projection.

At 1.5 feet in height, the frame is suited for:

  • Dressing areas

  • Heritage corridors

  • Accent walls

  • Prayer room interiors

  • Console backdrops

The wood surface retains natural tonal softness. Over time, it will deepen in character, responding to light and environment.

The mirror does not define the piece.
The carved surround does.

Human time, preserved.

Origin

The carving workshops of Madhavamala, Andhra Pradesh, sustain a disciplined wood tradition rooted in temple architecture and sacred domestic objects. The vocabulary of parrots, lotus forms, and layered scrollwork belongs to a lineage that predates contemporary décor culture.

Poola wood, native to the region, is selected for its fine grain and responsive carving quality. It allows sculptural detailing without fracturing under depth relief.

The twin parrot motif has long appeared in South Indian architectural ornament — symbolizing harmony, continuity, and watchfulness at thresholds.

This frame inherits that grammar.

Craft & Process

The circular inner ring is first measured and cut to maintain structural balance. The outer composition is then marked symmetrically to ensure bilateral harmony.

Carving proceeds in stages:

  • The crest is blocked out to establish vertical dominance.

  • Parrot forms are gradually released from the wood, shaped through successive gouge work.

  • Lower scrolls are carved last to anchor the frame visually and structurally.

No pre-molded components are attached.
Each element emerges from the same wood body.

Surface refinement is done manually. Subtle chisel marks remain beneath smoothing, carrying the rhythm of the hand.
