The forward-leaning posture suggests architectural support — as if bearing the invisible weight of a beam above. The carved ornamentation on the head and trunk reflects temple bracket detailing found in South Indian wooden architecture.

At 1.5 ft, the scale is suitable for:

  • Door frame flanking elements

  • Temple entry features

  • Heritage interior accents

  • Pillar projections

  • Architectural wall brackets

Over time, the Poola wood will darken gradually, enriching the carved patterns and deepening tonal contrast.

This is not decorative animal carving.
It is architectural symbolism rendered in wood.

Human Time, Preserved.
Made Slowly. Kept Forever.

Origin

In South Indian temple architecture, elephants symbolize strength, stability, and threshold guardianship. They often appear flanking entrances, mandapa pillars, and carved gateways.

Madhavamala’s carving tradition preserves this architectural vocabulary. These elephant heads are derived from structural bracket forms traditionally integrated into wooden temple facades and door frames.

Poola wood, native to the region, provides the required density and fine grain for deep carving while maintaining structural strength in projecting forms such as trunks and tusks.

Craft & Process

Each piece is carved from a single block of seasoned Poola wood.

  1. The primary elephant profile is blocked out first.

  2. Trunk curvature is shaped to maintain balance and structural integrity.

  3. Ear contours and forehead detailing are carved in layered depth.

  4. Ornamentation patterns are chiseled using fine detailing tools.

  5. Surface refinement preserves subtle tool rhythm rather than machine uniformity.

No composite assembly.
No applied decorative attachments.

The projection is structurally integrated into the base form to ensure durability when mounted.
